Congratulations to the following students who graduated this past Spring!
Spring 2021
John Whitman
BioPhysics
Jayaprakash Group
Publications: Spatio-temporal dynamics of Host-Virus competition: A model study of influenza A
Stochastic modeling of influenza spread dynamics with recurrences
John is currently a Senior Computational Scientist at SimBioSys, in Chicago. They perform patient specific simulation of tumors and their interaction with chemotherapy regimens using medical imaging data, metabolic profiles, standard histology, and spatially explicit biophysical models.
Advice you would give to a new graduate Physics student:
"My advice is to get a really good advisor, one that you can trust and one you get along with. My time with Jay is absolutely my favorite part of grad school, and I wouldn’t have my job, my papers, or my PhD without him, so really make sure that it’s a good fit."
Andres Medina
High Energy Astroparticle Physics
Research advisor: James Beatty
Andres' new position is a Data Scientist I - VP at Bank of America.
Personal quote: Graduate school can be demanding at times but it’s always good to maintain a balanced life. Good friends and hobbies go a long way to supporting your mental health and making the most of your experience as a graduate student. For me that included salsa dancing, swimming, playing board games, and hiking/camping.
Derek Everett
Research advisor: Ulrich Heinz
Research area: Heavy Ion Collisions
Publications: https://arxiv.org/abs/2107.11362, https://journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevLett.126.242301,
https://journals.aps.org/prc/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevC.103.054904, https://journals.aps.org/prc/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevC.103.064902
New job position: Senior Consultant @ Booz Allen Hamilton, Machine learning/Data science
Favorite quote from a mentor:
"If you're gonna make a mistake, make it loud!"
He was talking about playing an instrument, but I think the philosophy applies just as well to being a graduate student and doing scientific research. It's those quiet and unnoticed mistakes that prevent me from learning and prevent science from making progress.
Nicolas Macro
Research advisor: Dongping Zhong
Research area: Biological Physics
Publications:
Slowdown of Water Dynamics from the Top to the Bottom of the GroEL Cavity
Ultrafast Dynamics of Water–Protein Coupled Motions around the Surface of Eye Crystallin
Current position: Data Scientist I, Telematics at Root Insurance
Advice for new graduate students:
Talk to potential advisors early. Try to spend some time in their group as early as possible to understand the culture and research being done. Making sure that your advisor is both a good personality and research fit is one of your most important decisions as a graduate student.
We are very happy for all of our Spring graduates, unfortunately we did not hear back from everyone in time for the publication of this newsletter.
Congratulations to the following students!
