After earning his PhD degree from Tohoku University, he worked with Prof. J. M. Cowley at Arizona State University where he developed high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (1970-1982). In 1982 he returned to Japan and worked for 5 years with the Japanese government research project (ERATO) on nano-particles, then joined the NEC fundamental research laboratories in 1987. In 1991 he discovered carbon nanotubes that have initiated nano-material science and nanotechnology. He has been recognized with numerous awards and prizes that include Agilent Europhysics Prize (2002), Benjamin Franklin Medal in Physics (2002), Japan Academy Award and Imperial Award (2002), Balzan Prize for Nanoscience [Italy-Switzerland] (2007), The Kavli Prize in Nanoscience [Norway] (2008), The Prince of Asturias Award [Spain] (2008), Order of Culture [Japan] (2009), He is members of Foreign Associate of The National Academy of Sciences (2007), Foreign Member of The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (2009) and also member of The Japan Academy (2010).History of the Evans award lectures 1008 Evans Laboratory America/New_York public
