Goal 1: Bureaucracy
Bureaucracy: Identify ways to streamline bureaucracy (easier said than done!) and deal with meeting fatigue.
Vision of where we want to be in 5 years: Faculty self report higher levels of satisfaction with the ability to balance multiple professional obligations and/or see their work as generating meaningful impact.
- Action 1: Survey faculty about time spent on service and administrative activities
- Action 2: Create/advertise opportunities for project management training
- Action 3: Research and implement a project management tool to be employed by committees
- Action 4: Transparent reporting process for committees throughout the year and in year-end report out
- Action 5: Make meetings efficient
- Action 6: Through course scheduling and teaching assignments, create a time for faculty meeting during which no one intended to be at the meeting is teaching.
Goal 2: Committees
Committees: Give committees very specific goals each year in their charges and improve transparency of action/progress.
Vision of where we want to be in 5 years: The entire community is aware of what actions are ongoing within the committee structure, and there are clear metrics for year-to-year progress.
- Action 1: Research and implement a project management tool to be employed by committees
- Action 2: Ensure that committee charges include clear deliverables and timelines
Goal 3: Early Career
Early Career: Support early career faculty.
Vision of where we want to be in 5 years: Faculty onboarding provides new faculty with all the tools they need to succeed, link to the support of a welcoming and supportive hiring process.
- Action 1: Identify two mentors outside of the Annual Review Committee who the faculty can reach out to with initial questions. Schedule a lunch/coffee in the first few weeks faculty is here.
- Action 2: Develop and update a library of onboarding documents for HR, purchasing, mechanics of teaching, etc.
- Action 3: Explore mechanisms for more effective mentoring on university processes
Goal 4: Professional
Professional: Ongoing professional development.
Vision of where we want to be in 5 years: Faculty are supported to identify and work towards professional goals.
- Action 1: Identify areas in which faculty may consider professional development (i.e., teaching, mentoring, project management, time management, grant writing).
- Action 2: Identify and advertise professional development opportunities.
- Action 3: Make funding available for professional development.
