Quantum Algorithms: Particle and Wave Aspects

Location: 1080 Physics Research Building

Faculty Host: Nandini Trivedi

Abstract: The fact that quantum algorithms can solve computational problems more efficiently than their classical counterparts has been the driving force behind the intense effort to develop quantum technology. I will give an overview of various quantum algorithms invented over the years, highlighting the mathematical features that provide the quantum advantage and the physical properties underpinning them. In particular, I will point out how particle and wave features contribute to them.

Bio: Apoorva D. Patel is a Professor at the Centre for High Energy Physics and Convener of the Quantum Technology Initiative at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He obtained his MSc in Physics (1980) from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, and his PhD in Physics (1984) from the California Institute of Technology, USA. He has extensively worked on lattice gauge theory investigations of Quantum Chromodynamics. He is also notable for his work on quantum algorithms, and the application of information theory concepts to understand the structure of genetic languages. He has been exposed to the subject of quantum computation since his graduate student days at Caltech, and he has been teaching the subject at IISc for more than 25 years.
