This lecture presents an overview of the status of the investigation of the properties of the quark-gluon plasma using relativistic heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). My lecture will focus on the insights that have been gained to date by the comparison experimental data from both facilities with theoretical calculations, highlight some of the present challenges, and end with an outlook on the experimental investigations that are planned for the next decade.
