SUBMET taking data!

The SubMillichargedExperimeT (SUBMET) is now taking data.

The experiment located at J-PARC in Tokai, Japan is the newest of Prof. Hill’s dark sector experiments to come online. It searches for feebly interacting “millicharged” particles that may hold clues to understanding the nature of dark matter, or could even be the dark matter itself! Such particles are not detectable by the big LHC particle physics experiments like CMS (that Prof. Hill also works on), and so require a dedicated detector to discover.

SUBMET is complementary to Prof Hill’s other millicharged experiment,  milliQan, located at CERN, because it is sensitive to a different range of dark sector particle masses.

With millicharged experiments taking data on two continents on opposite sides of the globe, there is palpable excitement within Prof Hill’s group that one of both of these will shed light on dark matter in the near future!
