NIH S10 High-end Equipment Grant Awarded

Lumicks C-Trap

Ohio State was recently awarded an NIH S10 high-end instrument grant for $675,000 to fund the purchase a Lumicks C-Trap. This is a single molecule fluorescence and force spectroscopy instrument that combines methodologies that were awarded Nobel Prizes in 2014 and 2018. This instrument will support NIH projects of the PI Prof. Michael Poirier (Physics) and the three other major users: Profs. Karin Musier-Forsyth (Chemistry & Biochemistry), Carlos Castro (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering), and Cömert Kural (Physics), in addition to eight other users from 4 different colleges (Arts & Sciences, Engineering, Medicine and Pharmacy). The unique power of this instrument is not only that it is a state-of-the-art single molecule instrument, but that it is so user friendly that even new users can collect extremely high-quality data quickly. This will open the door to single molecule studies to many biology and material science labs throughout OSU. It will be managed within the NanoSystems Laboratory (NSL) in the Physics Research Building. This will be the only instrument of its kind in the State of Ohio and the closest unit is housed at the NIH in Bethesda Maryland.
