Graduate Women in Physics Help the Homeless

This winter, the Columbus YWCA has teamed up with local homeless shelters to provide overflow shelters--overnight shelters for single women who are turned away when the homeless shelters are full. In addition to providing hot meals and warm beds, the YWCA provides a multitude of necessary items to these women, such as toiletries and clothing. The Columbus Open Shelter is an emergency day shelter open to any homeless or marginally housed person. They collect and distribute necessities such as sleeping bags and warm clothes, free of charge, to those most in need in the Columbus area.

This winter is going to be a cold one, and GWiP wants to help out!

We have a lofty goal for this drive: For the month of 11/2011, we would like to raise 1,111 Newtons of donations! We will be holding the drive from Monday November 7, 2011 to Friday, November 18, 2011.

Donation boxes will be set up in the mailroom in PRB 1040. Here is a list of supplies that are most needed by the YWCA and the Open Shelter this winter. Please go through your garage sale pile, pick up an extra package of toilet paper at the grocery store, or simply help us by spreading the word!!

If you have any questions regarding this drive, please contact our Outreach Coordinator, Marci Howdyshell, at marci.howdyshell@gmail.com
