Professor Klaus Honscheid reports a successful start of the DESI (Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument) commissioning campaign which reached a major milestone recently when they used the OSU building commissioning instrument (led by Paul Martinin and Ashley Ross) to demonstrate that the DESI optical system works as designed.  The picture attached shows the first light picture of the Whirlpool Galaxy (M51).
