Celebrate International Women's day and the first woman PhD in Physics at OSU

Pixelated Katherine M Weimer

Friday March 8, is International Women's Day.  We have discovered that the first woman PhD at OSU Physics was Katherine M Weimer (pictured).  Katherine received her PhD in 1943 under Prof. Marion Llewellyn Pool.  Her thesis was entitled "Artificial Radioactivity of Barium and Lanthanum." Katherine raised three daughters through their early years and then joined the theory group of Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) in 1957. She retired from PPPL in 1984 after 29 years. Katherine passed away in 2001 following a short illness.
