Physicists would all agree that there are a lot of skills students learn in the physics class. But traditional assessment in regular physics courses only assess very limited spectrum of skills. If we want students to value those scientific abilities we try so hard to include in our instruction, we must find way to assess them. Here I am going to present how we restructured the grading system to shift towards performance based formative assessment. Also I will give some examples of the homework/exam problems we used to assess specific scientific abilities.
