Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

Graduate Women in Physics take Science to the Community

This week, the Graduate Women in Physics will be hosting a hands-on science lesson for two youth programs.  The lesson is entitled Electromagnets and Magnetic Materials. The students will get a lesson on magnetism, followed by a hands-on activity where they will get to make their own electromagnets using batteries and iron nails.  Finally, the kids will get to learn about magnetic material in surprising places as they extract iron from ‘Total’ breakfast cereal!

On November 28th, Marci Howdyshell, Nancy Santagata, and Morgan Welsh presented the lesson to nine students ages 4-7  from the African American and African Studies Math and Science Program at the African American and African Studies Community Extension Center. The purpose of the math and science program is to increase the comfort level of the students with math and science and to increase the number of students of color in math and science related careers.  On December 3rd, Andrea Albert and Richelle Teeling, will be presenting the lesson as part of the “Saturday Science Program” which is sponsored by the College of  Food, Agriculture & Environmental Sciences, 4-H Youth Development Program.
