6th Annual GRASP camp hosted 46 Campers in two sessions

Two students on field with OSU football player

The Physics Undergraduate Studies Office hosted the 6thannual Girls Reaching to Achieve in Sports and Physics (GRASP) Summer Camp in June 2013.  This year’s camp accommodated 18 campers during the first session (June 3-7) and 28 campers during the second session (June 17-21).

GRASP is a week long day camp and each day consists of hands-on, interactive physics demonstrations that show how physics is in everyday activities, like sports.  GRASP was created in 2008 to encourage middle school girls to consider careers in STEM.

This year’s activities included:

  • Physics of jumping rope and a performance by Jump Company USA
  • Physics of football with help from OSU football players
  • Physics of ice skating
  • Physics of swimming
  • Liquid nitrogen ice cream
  • Build your own catapult
  • Astrophysics Q&A session (hosted by CCAPP)
  • Magnetic car race (hosted by Richard Hughes)
  • Field trip to the OSU insectary and greenhouse
