"Meet the Department" Interview with Jeremy Lucy

Research Area: Condensed Matter Physics (experiment) with Prof Fengyuan Yang. (Fellowship)

Number of years at OSU:  >7 including undergraduate

Favorite Foods: Chinese-Szechuan. "I eat American Chinese food often, but nothing beats the authentic stuff. I like Thai food as well, but haven't discovered any remarkable Thai restaurants in Columbus."

Hobbies:  Sports, like disc golf and motorcycling.  I have a Honda motorcycle, which I enjoy riding and working on. I also enjoy some woodworking (I made my own patio furniture) and the occasional video game.

What was your first job? I helped run a family business, which operated a couple large stocked fishing lakes where people paid to fish. My first official paid job was in physics research at OSU.

What is the most interesting place you've ever visited? It wasn't exotic like Jim Beatty's trip, but I drove the Pacific coast highway and from LA to San Francisco (and Napa valley) over the course of a week - it was really cool. 

If you weren't a physicist, what would you be doing as a career?  Engineering, which is probably the field I will work in. I'm a hands-on person

What is your favorite place on campus?  West campus - Fred Beekman Park.

If you could stay a certain age forever, what would it be?  Why?  My current age.  I like gaining experiences in life, but I don't want to jump forward and miss the learning opportunities.

What is your most memorable experience or proudest accomplishment?
Proudest accomplishment:Earning my fellowship at OSU
Most memorable experience:  The REU I did at Cornell in 2010 - I loved the campus

Where would we find you on the morning of a home football game?  At home watching the game.

Tell us something(s) about yourself that most people in the department know about you.

  • Had hip surgery at age 23 (>2 years ago)
  • Bowled for 3 yrs for the Bowling Club at Ohio State. I also served sas the treasurer of the club for two seasons. My   coach was/is a PBA pro.
  • Was in the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at Ohio State and I served on the executive board for 3 yrs.
  • When I was a freshman, I started working in a Prof. Yang’s research lab at the end of my very first quarter.
