Summer Camps and Workshops for Young Women On Tap in June

The Department of Physics will be the site of two different workshops/camps for young women this June.  The Department will host its inaugural summer workshop for young women entering grades 10 and 11 this coming fall on June 5 and 6.  The ASPIRE workshop (Achieving in Science through Physics Instrumentation, Research, and Exploration) workshops aim to bridge the age gap between the Department of Physics' middle school GRASP camp and college.

Participants will:

  • learn more about research at Ohio State
  • gain hands-on experience with scientific instruments
  • analyze data from a physics experiment

The ASPIRE workshops are organized by Ohio State Physics and CCAPP Professor Amy Connolly and supported by a National Science Foundation CAREER grant award.

GRASP (Girls Reaching to Achieve in Sports and Physics) Camp will be held in two identical sessions again this year - June 9-13 and June 16-20.  These 5 day long camps for middle school age girls are organized and hosted by the Department of Physics Undergraduate Studies Office in coordination with physics faculty, staff and students.  Each day consists of hands-on interactive physics demonstrations and projects follwed by a physical activity that shows how physics relates to everyday phenomena.

GRASP began in June 2008 and quickly outgrew the single week that was scheduled.  In 2010 two identical weekly sessions were added to accomodate the growing number of middle school girls that were interested in learning more about physics.

The new ASPIRE workshop is a direct result of the need to continue to engage young women in the possibilties of a career in the sciences.

Take a moment to stop by when these camps are underway and observe the great work of our faculty and staff are doing to communicate the wonders of science to the next generation of scientists.
