Science Sundays begins anew for the 2016-17 Academic year with Emery Brown, MD, PhD, Warren M. Zapol Professor of Anesthesia, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School; Edward Hood Taplin PRofessor of Medical Engineering and COmputational Neuroscience, MIT.

Abstract: General anesthesia, a drug-induced reversible coma, allows patients to humanely undergo surgeries and invasive diagnostic procedures. Brown explains that under general anesthesia the brain is controlled by highly organized oscillations. Study of these oscillations resolves the long-standing mystery of general anesthesia and offers new insights into the brain’s fundamental workings.

Science Sundays are a free lecture serios open to the public, providing a wide range of current and emerging topics and issues in science that touch our everyday lives.

Each lecture will be held in the Ohio Union U.S. Bank Conference Theatre at 3:00 PM., with a reception following from 4-5 PM in the Ohio Union Ohio Staters Traditions Room.
